about Rear Admiral SS Godbole, VSM (RETD)

Rear Admiral SS Godbole is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from Nagpur University and was commissioned in the Navy in Aug 1968. He is a Post Graduate in Nuclear Technology from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre; Mumbai (1975-1977). He has undergone Naval Higher Command Course at Naval War College. Subsequently, Admiral Godbole has completed Post Graduate Diploma in Materials Management from IIMM, M Phil in Defense Strategy from Mumbai University and PhD.in Political Science from Osmania University.

Some of the important positions held by Admiral Godbole include:
a)   Design officer in the Indigenous Nuclear Submarine Programme at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre at Mumbai.
b)    Officer In Charge, Nuclear & Biological warfare and Damage Control (NBCD) School at INS Shivaji, Lonavala.
c)    Director of Dockyards and Director of Fleet Maintenance at Naval Headquarters, New Delhi.
d)    General Manager Refits, at Naval Dockyard Visakhapatnam.
e)    Director General Naval Projects at Visakhapatnam.
f)    Director Defence Machinery Design Establishment,(DMDE) Secunderabad.

Admiral Godbole was responsible for the first ever docking of aircraft carrier INS Viraat in India at CSL, Kochi in 1988-89, Major repairs cum modernization refits of Indian Submarines in Russian Yards and Fitment of Brahmos missiles on board Destroyer INS Rajput,etc.

Admiral Godbole is a recipient of the Commendation by the Chief of Naval Staff in 1989 and Vishisht Seva Medal by the President of India in 2003. He is also the recipient of Life Time Achievement awards from both the Institution of Engineers (India) and the Institute of Marine Engineers (India).

The Admiral is a Fellow of The Institution of Engineers (India) and the Institute of Marine Engineers and is actively involved with both these Institutes.

After retirement, Admiral Godbole had a stint in the corporate world for 8 years as a Technical Director in a Hyderabad based company for indigenization of pressure tight under water cables used in submarines and introduction of Electron Beam Technology in India. The Admiral is now an Advisor to a prominent Industrial Company involved indigenous development Machinery and System Controls used in the Defence Sector.
